Reflexology is an age-old therapy, most known for it's application to the feet.
Reflexology: My First Love in Holistic Therapy!
Let’s talk about where it all began. Reflexology was my first step into the world of holistic healing back in 2008—and I’ve never looked back.
The Origins of Reflexology
Reflexology is often described as an ancient therapy — not because it belongs to one single culture or moment in time, but because the understanding that the feet reflect the whole body has appeared again and again across history.
Long before reflexology was formalised as a modern practice, people across different civilisations were already working with the feet and hands as a way of supporting health, balance, and wellbeing.
Ancient Roots
Some of the earliest visual evidence linked to reflexology comes from ancient Egypt, where wall carvings dating back over 4,000 years depict scenes of foot and hand work. These images suggest an early recognition that touch applied to specific areas of the feet and hands could support the whole person.
In traditional Chinese medicine, the feet have long been understood as deeply connected to the flow of energy (Qi) through the body. Chinese practitioners recognised pathways and pressure points that influenced physical organs, emotional states, and overall vitality — ideas that closely mirror reflexology principles.
Similar foot-based healing practices have also appeared in India and other parts of Asia, where the feet were treated as sacred points of contact between the body and the earth.
Rather than a single origin, reflexology seems to arise from a shared human understanding:
That the body is interconnected — and that the feet tell a story.
Modern Reflexology
Reflexology as we know it today began to take clearer shape in the early 20th century.
American physician Dr William Fitzgerald introduced the concept of Zone Therapy, proposing that the body could be divided into longitudinal zones running from head to toe, with the feet acting as access points to those zones.
Later, Eunice Ingham, a physiotherapist, refined this work further by carefully mapping reflex points on the feet that corresponded to organs, systems, and structures throughout the body. Her work laid the foundation for modern reflexology charts and training.
Since then, reflexology has continued to evolve — blending anatomical understanding with nervous system support, holistic wellbeing, and intuitive listening.
Reflexology Today
Today, reflexology is recognised as a complementary therapy that supports relaxation, balance, and self-regulation.
While charts and maps provide guidance, experienced practitioners understand that reflexology is not a mechanical technique. Each person’s feet tell a unique story — shaped by life experience, stress, emotion, health, and energy.
Modern reflexology honours both:
the ancient wisdom that the feet reflect the whole person
and the present-moment listening required to work with what is actually showing up.
How This Informs My Practice
In my work, reflexology is not about fixing or forcing change.
It’s about listening.
By working with the feet, I’m listening for what the body is communicating — physically, mentally, emotionally, and beyond words. The feet often reveal patterns that the mind hasn’t yet caught up with.
This approach allows reflexology to become:
a place of safety and rest
a way for the nervous system to settle
a bridge back to self-trust and inner knowing
Reflexology doesn’t tell you where to go.
It helps you feel your next step.
